Abstract

In May 2013, the Tobacco Control Law was enacted to comprehensively prohibit the advertising and promotion of tobacco in Vietnam. However, violation of this law is very common at Points of Sale (POS) due to poor knowledge and attitude of POS owners about the ban on tobacco advertising (TA). In 2017, a cross sectional study conducted aimed at assessing the knowledge and attitudes of 1,385 POS owners about the TA ban across five largest cities in Vietnam. Results showed that 73.2% of owners were aware that TA was banned in Vietnam and 11.7% knew that displaying more than one pack, one box or one carton of a tobacco brand was prohibited by law. While majority of POS owners supported the ban on TA at POS (80.6%), a low percentage supported the regulation of displaying no more than 1 pack, one carton or one box of a tobacco brand at POS (39.1%). These findings highlight the need for an awareness campaign to improve knowledge and attitudes of POS owners about the ban on TA and the accompanied penalties to decrease TA violations in Vietnam.
