Abstract

Objective of the study: To assess the knowledge and awareness of hypertension among employees of Hanoi Power Corporation (EVN HANOI) in 2017.

Study subjects and methods: The study subjects were employees of EVN HANOI. Study methods: A cross-sectional study with a sample size of 541 workers selected from 6 companies under EVN HANOI. The study subjects were selected by the systematic random sampling technique. The technique of collecting information was implemented through direct interviews via questionnaire and the data was analyzed by SPSS 20.0 software.

Results: 68.6% of the subjects correctly defined hypertension (blood pressure ≥ 140/90mmHg). 54.3% of the subjects did not know that the top number in blood pressure reading was systolic pressure and only 57.3% of the study subjects knew the normal systolic pressure was below 140mmHg. 7.6% of the surveyed people went to see the doctors for consultation about hypertension from 1 to 2 times per month. The major risk factors for hypertension were defined as alcohol consumption (88.7%), obesity (87.6%), stress (86.5%), smoking (82.1%), hypercholesterolemia (78.7%), diabetes (77.3%), less exercise (77.1%), work stress (74.9%), age (74. 3%), eating salty food (73.2%). The majority of the subjects identified regular exercise as the simplest measure to control high blood pressure (71.3%).

Conclusion: The vast majority of cases lack knowledge, awareness of hypertension and are not aware of the role of increasing systolic pressure in hypertension. There should be an education programme for workers to raise their awareness of the long-term harm of hypertension if it is not under control, especially the systolic pressure, and self-control of hypertension.
